Nos entusiasma cultivar lectores y lectoras, escritores y escritoras, que perciban las asociaciones entre aspectos de la vida que usualmente no son puestos en una misma oración; aquellos y aquellas quienes han percibido las intersecciones entre la ciencia y la literatura; aquellos quienes reparten su amor y pasión entre las dos disciplinas, o quienes intuyen que el universo se mira mejor cuando se observa desde distintos ángulos, que el mundo es más rico cuando se hace espacio para la diversidad – de idiomas, de razas, de credos.

Estas son algunas ideas:

• Artículos de divulgación científica en temas de medicina – “science writing” o narrativa no-ficción en medicina. Con lo anterior queremos decir que nos interesan escritos que aborden temas en medicina tomando en cuenta la precisión del dato científico sin abandonar el aspecto creativo y narrativo de la pieza como elemento esencial para contar la historia, colocándola dentro de un contexto social y cultural.
• Poesía: que sea capaz de sumergirnos dentro de ese instante-Universo cuando fue creada. Hermosa, articulada con destreza, pero más que lo anterior, que nos conmueva y sea capaz de mostrarnos algo que no habíamos visto desde esa perspectiva.
• Cuentos: envíanos una pieza que, al incorporar algún aspecto de la medicina, por más pequeño que sea, nos muestre también algo del mundo real en el que vivimos, nuestros triunfos y nuestras derrotas, lo bueno y lo que detestamos. La literatura es eso: la oportunidad para mirarnos desde todos los ángulos con valentía, reflejando nuestra humanidad entera.
• Ensayos sobre aspectos relacionados a la educación en medicina. Si eres un paciente (como somos todos) dentro de este sistema de salud, si eres estudiante de medicina, profesor del medicina, médico, enfermera o enfermero, médico asistente, etc., y tienes una observación sobre algún aspecto relevante a la profesión, y en especial, a la manera en que se enseña, practica o aplica, nos interesa tu escrito. Por ejemplo,puedes escribir sobre política pública en medicina (lo que existe, lo que funciona, lo que no funciona, ideas sobre cómo hacer mejor las cosas), o puedes escribir sobre una experiencia personal que de alguna manera le permita al lector experimentar lo que has vivido tú.
• Ensayos desde la perspectiva de un paciente. Nos interesan ensayos que hagan visible e ineludible lo que no lo ha sido.
• Si eres escritor y te interesa o te conmueve colaborar con nosotros, y tienes alguna pieza que de algún modo dialogue con la medicina (aun cuando no cupiera dentro de ninguna de las categorías anteriores), nos encantaría poder incluirte.

En general:

Stethoscopes & Pencils busca escritores de todo tipo, de toda raza, de todos los colores a quienes le interese publicar su trabajo en español y/o inglés y alcanzar una audiencia más diversa, cultural y geográficamente.

En resumen, nos interesa la medicina, la literatura, y la medicina en la literatura. Nos interesa la medicina como origen de la creación literaria, y cualquier otro punto de intersección. Nos encantan las intersecciones.

Pero lo que más nos interesa es que lo que escribas tenga “alma” y “corazón”, que tenga pasión. Que no sea solo técnicamente hábil sino que sea capaz de conmovernos como lectores porque habla, e intenta derivar sentido, sobre lo que significa ser un ser humano en este momento de la historia y siempre.

We look forward to cultivate readers and writers with varied interests, who are able to perceive associations between seemingly unconnected aspects of life, objects and subjects that are not usually considered together. We are looking for people who can conceive of science and of literature as two complementary ways of looking at the world and understanding ourselves. We’d love to be in the company of writers and readers who follow on their intuition that the world is made richer and more meaningful through the expression of its diversity – of language, of religion, of race.

These are some ideas of genres you might explore:

• Creative science writing (non-fiction) related to medicine. We are interested in pieces that treat medical topics in ways that allow for both scientific precision in the information presented and a strong narrative, a powerful creative arc as the element to tell an absorbing story that succeeds at placing medicine within its social, human context.
• Poetry: send us something that allows us to enter the Universe-instant when the piece was created — something beautiful, dexterous in its use of language, but most of all, a piece that is able to move us and which allows us to see the world or a particular event differently.
• Short story, flash fiction: Send us a story that incorporates some aspect of medicine, however small, in an unusual context, and, in doing so, allows us to think about a subject in a way we may have not entertained before; a perspective that forces us to confront ourselves and think about the world we live in a complex, nuanced way –our triumphs and our tribulations, the good stuff and the ugly, too. Literature should do just that: it should be completely open, an opportunity to show us all of our humanity.
• Essays and/or Opinion pieces related to medical education or policy that provide a strong, intelligent, well-thought-of commentary about the healthcare system or the state of medical education, and which may offer ideas on how to make it better. You may be a patient, a medical student, a nurse, a professor of medicine, a physician, a physician assistant, etc. and you have an observation about an aspect of medicine that is relevant not only to the practice of medicine but also to society. You can write, for example, about a particular policy and its repercussions, or about a powerful personal experience navigating healthcare.
• An essay from your perspective as a patient. How does your healthcare system treat you in your country? We are interested in a story that renders what is relevant but often invisible, completely visible and unavoidable.
• If you are a writer who is moved to collaborate with us, and have a piece that, in some way, is in dialogue with medicine, we would love to include you here (even if your piece is remotely related to medicine.

In general:

Stethoscopes & Pencils is looking for exciting writers who are interested in publishing their work in either English or Spanish to reach a wider audience, culturally and geographically.

We are interested in Medicine, in Literature, and in Medicine within Literature. We are interested in medicine as a point of departure for the creation of literature, as well as any other point of intersection. We love intersections.

Please keep in mind, whatever it is you send us, try to put some passion in your writing. It wouldn’t be enough – it never is – to write skillfully. You also need to write from your heart so it can move us as readers, so it says something about what it means to be human.
